- Retinolpalmitate vs. 0.3 Retinol - My test – Texture, How to use, Experience Review

Updated: Dec 4, 2021

No anti-age skincare routine can be imagined without retinol. Who really wants to do something against wrinkles or prevent them can`t get around it.

In my article „Retinol – Proven anti-aging skincare" I described the basics about effects, forms, and how to use retinol.

Here, I want to share my experience about the retinol products I`ve tested so far.

Have fun reading!

Level 1

As a start in using retinol I chose

As a Palmitate it is a good option to start with, for permanent use or with sensitive skin, so I chose it as the product to go with.

Texture: Very light & white lotion. Absorbed fast. (picture below)

I started applying the concentrate 1-2x/week. In the first two weeks I noticed a slight tingling. After applying it, it took like a day before my skin started peeling, but only very slightly.

After the peeling diminished more & more and my skin adapted, I increased using it to 3x/week which worked very well and did not cause irritations.

In the beginning I had used it around the eyes which led to irritations. As I didn`t want to neglect my eye area I started using

additionally. Maybe it was an unlucky overlap of products as I had a slight irritation at first but then I adapted to the new product very fast. There was no peeling effect!

After a couple of weeks my skin adapted fully to both products and I have to say a visible effect is noticeable. The skin is more even, looks fresh and the pores are less visible. There`s hardly any peeling effect anymore.

Comparison of texture

Upper: La Roche Posay Redermic (R)etinol Intensive Anti-Aging Concentrate.

Lower: Skinceuticals Retinol 0.3

Level 2

After successfully testing and tolerating La Roche Posay`s Retinolpalmitate, I wanted to go a bit further so I chose a 0.3 % formulation and went with

Skinceuticals 0.3 Refining Night Cream

Texture: white & very light.

When I used it the first time not much happened except for the fact that my skin became a bit dry.

After 2-3 days my skin started peeling a lot, much more than under LRP. I couldn`t use powder or any form of make up in that phase. I got the impression the concentration was too strong for my sensitive skin. So I used it only as a "Boost“ inbetween or as spot treatment and in the course started noticing that my skin tolerated it better and better. So I started another try using it regularly once a week.

After about 4 months I tolerate it very well, I use it about 2x/week and it works totally fine. Still, my skin is peeling but I perceive it as rather positive, as I like the feedback for the effect to my skin and I imagine how the skin cells are renewing 😊 There aren`t any irritations, my skin isn`t dry anymore. The days that it is peeling still I can`t use any make up or powder as it would be too visible.

To be continued 😍...
