Retinol: The Key to Youthful skin #Anti-Aging Skin Boost

Aktualisiert: 23. Aug. 2023

For only a few active ingredients used in cosmetics there are studies that prove their effect. Retinol is one of them and shouldn`t be missing in a decent anti-aging routine! Here are the basics to start with Retinol...

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, which is a fat-soluble Vitamin and antioxidant.

The benefits have been proven many times in studies, making the active ingredient one of the most important, if not THE most important, when it comes to anti-aging/slow-aging. Anyone who deals with the topic and is unsure which product to choose in all the cosmetic jungle should put retinol first.

Effects of Retinol

  • Supports collagen production

  • Refining pores

  • Reduces wrinkles

  • Protection from free radicals

  • Helps with acne

  • Evening out skin texture

On the ingredients list you`ll find descriptions like

  • Retinyl-. Retinol-Palmitate, Retinyl Linoleate: They are precursors that are less strong.

  • Retinol is a more potent form that is being transformed to Retinal and eventually to Tretinoin.

What is the right form of Retinol for me?

Retinol-precursors: Contrary to assumptions Retinol-precursors are effective and work well:

for starting with Retinol, with sensitive skin, for permanent use.

Retinol: Works well with normal skin. Nevertheless choose a dosage from the lower end first and start gradually. Or e.g. use as booster in between.

Tretinoin/Retin A/Vitamin-A-Acid/all-trans-Retin acid: biologically active form of Vitamin A: In Germany only available by prescription. Not contained in cosmetic products.

➡️ The higher the concentration, the more irritating Retinol can be for your skin!

In Germany concentrations up to 1 % Retinol are sold OTC.

How to use Retinol

Start with applying 1-2x/week. Then you can gradually increase it so you`ll find the perfect balance for your skin.

Use sun protection!

As Retinol renews your top layer of skin cells, the skin is more sensitive to sunlight. Therefore avoid the sun and always use SPF!
