Hyaluronic acid is a Glycosaminoglycan, which is part of our connective tissue.
As we get older it diminishes more and more and our skin loses its elasticity.
Of course, we want to counteract with lotions, creams and masks.
What does hyaluronic acid do?
It`s simple. It retains water (scientifically speaking up to 6 liters of water per gramm), which leads to an effective plumping effect.
Which forms of hyaluronic acid are there?
Most of the time you read about high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. Next to that there is
oligo-hyaluronic acid.
Fact is: The smaller the molecule, the deeper it can penetrate into your skin.
The effects
High-molecular weight hyaluronic acid
Large sized molecule. Protection of skin surface, anti-inflammatory.
Low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid
Small molecule. Penetrates deeper into the skin and can plump up wrinkles.
Oligo-hyaluronic acid
Very small molecule. Penetrates deep into the skin. Plumps up skin best.
Unfortunately not every brand indicates which molecule size they use. However, a lower price can be taken as an indicator that rather a high-weight molecule is used as production is more simple.
