SPF - What the number actually means?
The sun protection factor (SPF) indicates how much longer you can stay in the sun than your individual skin type naturally allows. With very light skin, for example, your natural protection is around 10 minutes. The darker the skin type, the longer the natural protection. With a sun protection factor of 20, you can stay in the sun 20 times longer.

How much sunscreen do I need?
The sun protection factor can only develop its full power if sufficient product has been applied. The recommendation is 2 mg per cm2, which corresponds to 3-4 tablespoons for an adult.

When do I have to apply sunscreen?
Chemical sunscreen needs to be applied 20-30 minutes before going out in the sun. Mineral sun protection works immediately.
How often do I have to apply sunscreen?
A rule of thumb states that the sunscreen should be reapplied about every 2 hours.
After bathing, you should put on lotion again immediately. Even if waterproof sunscreen has been used.
Can I use my sunscreen longer than one year?
Depicted in the symbol of a small opened jar you can find the product`s durability. It`s given in months. E.g. 12 M = 12 months shelf life after opening. Sunscreens should not be used longer than the stated shelf life. They then lose their protective effect. Special care should be taken with products containing octocrylenes. According to studies, after a certain time the substance breaks down into benzophenone, which is suspected of being carcinogenic.
Treat your skin with an after-sun lotion after a day in the sun. It moisturizes and regenerates the skin.

The best sunscreen from drugstores in tests
Drugstore products or private labels regularly perform at least as well in tests, sometimes even better than the expensive competition. This was also the case with the test by Stiftung Warentest from 07/2021. Here these cheaper sunscreens have received the grade "very good":
Sundance Sensitiv Sonnenbalsam SPF 30 by DM
Lavozon Sonnenmilch SPF 30 by Müller
Sunozon Sonnenspray SPF 30 by Rossmann
Sun D'Or Sonnenmilch SPF 50 Edeka and Netto
Sunscreen from the pharmacy
La Roche Posay Anthelios
The Shaka Fluid is one of the most popular sun protection products from the pharmacy. Additionally it contains antioxidants, is very light and fluid and indeed leaves no oily film. Personally I think it's the best product so far. I tend to get small pimples when I use sunscreen every day. With the Shaka Fluid it is reduced to a minimum.
Eucerin Oil Control
Suitable for impure skin prone to acne. Available for face and body. SPF 30 + SPF 50. Does not leave an oily film. For me personally, it has led to slight pimples with longer use.
