Bakuchiol is traded as "natural" or "new" retinol. The natural cosmetics industry likes to use bakuchiol as an alternative to retinol due to its plant origin. What's up with the new trend? Is Bakuchiol Better Than Retinol?

What is Bakuchiol - where does it come from?
Bakuchiol is found in large amounts in the plant Psoralea corylifolia (also called babchi plant or rosin clover). In Asian medicine, it is used against a variety of diseases that are also being studied in studies and include, for example, cancer, diabetes or liver diseases.

Among other things, the effects are said to be
anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anticarcinogenic and antibacterial.
So whats up with this trend? Is Bakuchiol as good as Retinol?
Studies are investigating whether bakuchiol is comparable to the effect of retinol. In fact, bakuchiol and retinol are structurally different, but deliver very similar results in studies.
It has to be pointed out that the studies that can currently be found on bakuchiol do not have a large number of participants.
Below you will find a few links to further information.
Effects of Retinol and Bakuchiol
Studies have shown some positive effects on our skin for both bakuchiol and retinol. Both active ingredients
are proven to reduce lines and wrinkles
improve skin elasticity
improve skin firmness
act against hyperpigmentation
repair sun-related damage
protect against free radicals
help with acne (anti-inflammatory effect)

Retinol vs. Bakuchiol
Benefits of Bakuchiol
A big advantage of bakuchiol is its tolerability, especially with sensitive skin. Studies have shown less skin scaling and less stinging with bakuchiol than with retinol. Bakuchiol is moisturizing and even has skin-soothing properties. Unlike retinol, bakuchiol does not remove the top layer of skin cells. This makes the skin less sensitive to sunlight.
Benefits of Retinol
Retinol has an exfoliating effect that refines pores and smoothes the skin.

Application of Bakuchiol
Bakuchiol can be applied morning and/or evening.
In one of the studies, a 0.5 % bakuchiol cream was used.
Combinations with vitamin C or retinol are also on the market.
