Oil cleansing comes from old beauty rituals and has been rediscovered in recent years, also with the trend around Korean cosmetics. Oil cleansers effectively remove make-up, sun lotion and impurities, provide care for the skin and ensure a wonderful glow!
This is a step by step guide on how to optimally use an oil cleaner; get most out of its benefits, get tips and last but not least products to achieve optimal results.

Why Oil-Cleansing?
The principle of oil cleansing is rooted in the science of "fight fire with fire", also known as the "oil dissolves oil" concept.
When an oil cleanser is applied to the skin, it blends with the oils on the face. In particular, sebum, make-up, sunscreen and other oily impurities can be perfectly removed. The oil cleaner is gently massaged in and the impurities are thoroughly removed with the rinse.
Which is the best oil for cleansing?
💡 Oil cleansing for acne-prone skin:
For oily skin, and skin prone to acne and pimples, use oils such as argan oil, hemp oil, jojoba oil (so-called non-comedogenic oils).
💡 If you have dry or sensitive skin, use oils such as macadamia oil or squalane.
Which oils are considered non-comedogenic?
The following oils in cosmetics are considered non-comedogenic: ✓ Argan Oil, Hemp Oil, Jojoba Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Castor Oil. Triglycerides and Squalane are also considered non-comedogenic.
Avoid these oils if you have acne-prone skin; they are very high on the comedogenicity scale:
❌ Wheat germ oil, mineral oil, linseed oil, palm oil, cocoa butter, marula, coconut oil.
In between, there are plenty of medium comedogenic oils.

Oil-Cleansing in the morning or evening?
Incorporate the oil cleanse into your evening skincare routine.
Over the course of the day, sebum builds up, we wear make-up and sunscreen. These oily substances are effectively removed with Oil Cleansing.
A gentle, water-based cleanser, such as micellar water, is usually sufficient for the morning.
How does Oil Cleansing work?
Step-by-Step Guide to Oil Cleansing
Choosing the Right Oil Cleanser: It is important to choose an oil cleanser that suits your skin type and concerns. If you have dry or sensitive skin, opt for nourishing oils such as macadamia oil, almond oil or squalane. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, consider using lighter oils like argan oil, hemp oil, or jojoba oil.
Preparation: Start with dry hands and a dry face. Tie your hair back to avoid getting your hair in contact with the oil. A hair band is very helpful here.
Dose and Apply: Place a coin-sized amount of your chosen oil cleanser in the palm of your hand. Gently rub your hands together to warm the oil before applying to your dry face.
Massage: Use your fingertips to massage the oil into your skin in a circular motion. This massage not only cleanses, but also stimulates blood circulation and relaxes the facial muscles. Take your time and enjoy this soothing ritual.
Emulsify: To emulsify the oil, lightly wet your hands and continue massaging your face. The water mixes with the oil and a milky consistency develops. This step is critical for easy rinsing and complete removal of contaminants.
Rinse: Rinse your face thoroughly with lukewarm water. Make sure all traces of the oil cleanser are removed from your skin. Pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel.
Post-cleanse (optional): Depending on your skincare routine, you can follow with a gentle foam, micellar or gel cleanser to ensure all residue is removed. This step is especially useful for removing water-based impurities like sweat and if you have very oily skin or wear a lot of makeup.
Skincare after cleansing: Proceed with the rest of your skincare including toners, serums, moisturizers.

Benefits of Oil Cleansing
Thorough cleansing: The oil cleansing effectively dissolves even stubborn waterproof make-up and sunscreen.
Preserves Natural Moisture: Unlike traditional cleansers, which can strip skin of its natural oils, oil cleansing maintains skin's moisture barrier, preventing over-drying.
Suitable for All Skin Types: Contrary to popular belief, the oil cleanse can be customized for all skin types. The key is choosing the right oil for your specific needs.
Relaxation: The massage movement during the oil cleansing supports blood circulation, promotes cell renewal and relaxes the facial muscles.
Nourishing and Antioxidant: Rich in antioxidants, vitamins and fatty acids, many vegetable oils used in oil cleansers provide nourishment and protection to the skin.
Tip for optimal Oil Cleansing
Patch Test: Before using any new oil cleanser, always do a patch test to determine if there are any allergic reactions or sensitivities.
Massage techniques: Experiment with different massage techniques such as lymphatic drainage massage or acupressure for additional relaxation and beneficial effects on the skin.
Warm Towel Compress: To enhance the experience, place a warm, damp towel on your face for a few seconds before gently wiping away the oil. This also helps open pores for a deeper cleanse.
Consistency is key: As with any skincare routine, consistent use of oil cleansing over time brings the best results.
Oil cleansing is a skincare ritual that offers both practical and therapeutic benefits. By adopting this ancient yet modern practice, you can achieve a glowing complexion while allowing yourself a moment of self-care. Remember that everyone's skin is unique. As such, it may take some experimentation to find the perfect oil cleanser and routine that works for you.
